Siting decisions that matter in February

Almost every hot tub regret traces to placement. The distance from the house matters enormously when it is fifteen degrees and you are in a robe — a tub at the far corner of the property gets used in July and abandoned in January. The approach needs to be a surface that can be cleared and will not become an ice sheet. Snow shedding from the roof above must not land on the cover or the path. There has to be somewhere to put cleared snow. And the cover needs room to open with a lifter, which is frequently forgotten until the tub is in place.

The pad is structural

A filled hot tub with occupants is a serious point load. It needs a properly prepared base — compacted aggregate or a reinforced concrete slab — that is level and will stay level through freeze-thaw. Settling on one corner stresses the shell and can void a manufacturer warranty. Recessed and partially sunken installations need particular attention to drainage and service access: water has to be able to leave, and panels have to remain reachable, because at some point something will need servicing.

Utilities

Most spas require a dedicated circuit with a nearby disconnect, and the specifics depend on the model. That work should be planned before hardscape is set, because trenching through a finished patio is expensive and looks it. Gas lines for adjacent fire features and low-voltage lighting runs belong in the same trench.

What drives the cost

The tub itself is your purchase and varies enormously; what we quote is the site work. That is driven by: pad construction and whether the installation is surface-set, recessed, or fully sunken, the distance of electrical and utility runs from the house, how much hardscape is being built or modified around the tub, whether screening or overhead structure is included, site access for delivery, and grade work on sloped lots.
