Pickleball has gone from novelty to the most requested sport court we build, and North Idaho has taken to it enthusiastically. A private court is a substantial construction project — excavation, base, slab, surfacing, fencing, and lighting — and the ones that disappoint were almost always built on an inadequate base or sited without thinking about noise and sun. Getting the dimensions right

A regulation pickleball court playing surface is 20 by 44 feet. But you cannot build a 20 by 44 pad and have a usable court — you need run-off space around the lines for players to move. A commonly recommended total footprint is around 30 by 60 feet, and more is better if the space allows. Squeezing the surround is the most common regret, because it cannot be fixed later without rebuilding. We will tell you honestly whether your site fits a court worth playing on.

What the build involves

• Excavation and engineered base — compacted aggregate in lifts, built for this region's freeze-thaw.
• Reinforced concrete or asphalt slab, laid to precise slope for drainage.
• Acrylic sport surfacing in multiple coats, with line striping.
• Net posts set in proper footings below frost depth.
• Fencing sized so balls stay in and the court does not feel like a cage.
• Lighting for evening play, which in this latitude is most of the usable season.
• Drainage around the court so the surrounding grade does not send water across it.
• Landscape integration so it reads as part of the property.

The two things people underestimate

First, noise. Pickleball is genuinely loud — the paddle-ball impact carries further than tennis and at a frequency people notice. Siting relative to your own house and to neighbours matters, and screening, planting, and distance all help. It is worth raising early rather than after the first weekend of play. Second, orientation. A court aligned so players face directly into low morning or evening sun is unpleasant to use at exactly the hours people want to play. North-south alignment is the general starting point, adjusted for your site.

Slope, drainage, and North Idaho winters

A sport court needs a precise, consistent slope — enough to shed water, not enough to affect play. That drainage matters more here than in a mild climate: water that sits on or under the surface and freezes causes heaving and cracking, and once a sport surface cracks the repair is visible. The base has to be built and compacted for freeze-thaw, and the surrounding grade must not deliver runoff onto the court. Plan also for where snow gets pushed when the court is cleared.

What drives the cost

The largest factors are site conditions — how much excavation, grading, and retaining the location requires — and total footprint. Then: slab specification, surfacing system and number of coats, fencing height and type, lighting scope, drainage work, site access for equipment and concrete, and whether the court is multi-use with additional striping. A flat, accessible site and a sloped one requiring retaining walls are dramatically different projects for the same court.
